Give students an opportunity to grow their love of reading by volunteering for United We Read!
United We Read is a partnership started with Lubbock County school districts to encourage 2nd-grade students to engage in active reading and to prepare them for 3rd grade. Every year, our volunteers read to our students, guide them through a craft, and give them a copy of the book so they can practice their reading skills at home.
Last year, volunteers visited 190 second grade classrooms, in 9 school districts and two charter schools, reading to over 4,500 students.
We prioritize education as the key to children’s future success. The purpose of this event is to highlight the importance of students being grade-level readers by 3rd grade. Research shows that students who have not mastered basic reading skills by then begin to fall behind in every area of study, as classrooms shift from learning to read to reading to learn.
United We Read is a fun way for students to stay engaged in reading. We need volunteers to help us organize and provide thousands of students with books and crafts!
Volunteers will read a children's book to 2nd grade classrooms across the LISD district to encourage reading.
We prepare a craft that matches the theme of the book to keep students interested and engaged in the story.
By donating to United Way, you can help us get the books and craft materials for students to participate.
